For the second year, we welcome Benito's coffee on our menu.
Honduras often flies under the radar as a Central American origin. It doesn’t offer the large-volume lots of Mexico or Guatemala, nor does it carry the same reputation for quality as Panama or Costa Rica. But make no mistake: the coffees coming out of Honduras are exceptional. Showcasing such coffees from farmers who were historically excluded from accessing the specialty market is crucial; our commitment to support smallholders through Semilla is only growing.
Benito knows a thing or two about coffee farming. He has been working his land for nearly 5 decades. Despite rising production costs and the uncertainty of the global coffee sector, Benito remains committed to managing his farm sustainably and securing his well-being, especially now that his eight children are independent.
Here are a few words from Benito Sanchez:

Over the past 15 years, Canadian government involvement has significantly influenced Honduran democracy, often creating favorable conditions for Canadian corporations at the expense of local communities. Buying coffee consciously is a small but meaningful way to push back against those dynamics.

OUR IMPRESSIONS
Coffees coming out of Honduras are slept on. This is not a well known origin when it comes to Central America, but the coffees are so tasty.
HOW PROCESSING IMPACTS FLAVOUR
Cherries for this lot were harvested at peak ripeness and de-pulped the same day. The coffee then underwent 50 hours of dry fermentation in tanks, followed by drying in a solar dryer covered with transparent plastic for 25 to 30 days.
This lot from Mr. Sanchez is absolutely gorgeous. The picking and processing was immaculately done, and you can taste the clean profile right of the first sip.
The acidity is beautiful and made us think of blood orange, but you could label this with many other citrus. There also was a slight stone fruit undertone.
The nuttiness is super enjoyable, think pecan, and this coffee is sweet like liquid caramel.
Truly an unpretentious yet delectable cup of coffee we can't get enough of.

Many growers in Honduras (and frankly, everywhere) report that prices paid through conventional models are simply too low to generate profit. At best, they cover picking and input costs, and often they don’t even meet that threshold. This is why we value our partnership with Semilla: they pay peripheral smallholders well above market price and give them a chance to access the international specialty market market.
When you support small roasters like us who support small importers like Semilla, you help us all challenge the coffee status quo keeping the farmers in poverty.
Yes, we still need to find ways to compensate farmers even more for their work, and the more coffee we sell, the more we can implement a vision that centers farmers 🙂
